Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832) was a famous German poet, novelist,
scientist and statesman.
From 1786 to 1788 he lived in Italy, studying among other things the ideal
of beauty in classical antiquity. In his autobiographical book 'Italienische Reise'
he reports on this period.
The drawing was inspired by this book. It deals with the wide gap between
Goethe's views and the deterioration of Germany during the Nazi regime and
World War II. The pencil lines are entirely made up of written text.
